Big, Bigger, Biggest

Three or four of the same thing in different sizes, all standing on the same line so they are fair to compare. Pupils find the biggest or the smallest, or tap them in order from smallest to biggest. Once they’re done, the words smallest, bigger and biggest appear under each one.

For EYFS–KS1. About 5 minutes. Number & thinking. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

Tips for teachers

• Line up real objects on the table and compare them the same way.
• Start with sizes far apart, then turn on close sizes.
• Ask pupils to say the words as they tap: “small, bigger, biggest”.
• Try smallest as well as biggest: it is often harder.
