Rhyme Time

Rhyme is an early step towards phonics. Pupils hear a word, such as cat, and pick the picture that rhymes with it, or hear two words and decide whether they rhyme. After a try that isn’t right, the game says the two words together so pupils can hear the different endings.

For EYFS–KS2. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed.

What pupils practise

• Hear when two words rhyme
• Find a word that rhymes with another
• Listen to the ends of words

Tips for teachers

• Say the words slowly and stretch the ends: “c-at, h-at”.
• Start with “do they rhyme?”, then move on to finding the rhyme.
• Make up silly rhymes together: cat, hat, bat, zat.
• For readers, turn on the words to see the rhyming ends underlined.
