Pairs

A calm memory game. Pupils turn over two cards at a time to find matching pairs. There is no timer: cards that don’t match stay up until the pupil taps to turn them back, so there is always time to look. Play as two teams to practise taking turns, or match pictures to words for early readers.

For KS1–KS3. About 6 minutes. Emotions & social. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

Tips for teachers

• Start with 3 pairs, then build up to 6 and 8.
• Say the name of each card as it turns over, and ask pupils to join in.
• In teams, praise good waiting and watching as well as finding pairs.
• Use picture to word once pupils can read a few simple words.
