Odd One Out

Four pictures: three from one group and one that doesn’t belong, such as an apple, a banana, an orange and a sock. Pupils find the odd one out, then the game explains why: “The others are all food, and a sock is clothes.” Talking about why builds category words and reasoning.

For EYFS–KS2. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

• Explain why, using group words like food, animals, clothes and toys
• Build vocabulary for everyday things

Tips for teachers

• Ask “why doesn’t it belong?” before the game says the answer.
• Start with 3 pictures, then try 4.
• Play with real objects: three spoons and a sock on a tray.
• Accept other good reasons too, and talk about them.
