Feelings Faces

Pupils look at a friendly face and choose how they feel, or hear a feeling and find the face that shows it. After a wrong try, a clue points to what to look at, such as “their eyebrows point down in the middle”. Start with happy, sad, cross and scared, then add surprised, tired, worried and calm.

For KS1–KS3. About 5 minutes. Emotions & social. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

What pupils practise

• Recognise feelings from faces
• Notice the clues: mouth, eyebrows and eyes
• Name feelings with the right word
• Talk about when we feel this way

Tips for teachers

• Make the face yourself after each answer and ask pupils to copy it.
• Ask “when do you feel happy?” to link feelings to real moments.
• Keep the choices at 2 at first. Add more when pupils are confident.
• Turn off “Read the choices aloud” for pupils practising reading the words.
