More or Fewer

Two groups of the same objects. Pupils tap the group with more, or the group with fewer. After a wrong try, the game lines the two groups up side by side, so the extra objects are easy to see, and pupils look again. Turn on tricky sizes to make the smaller group’s objects bigger, so pupils learn it’s about how many, not how big.

For EYFS–KS1. About 5 minutes. Number & thinking. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

Tips for teachers

• Ask “how do you know?” and let pupils point to the extra ones.
• Start with big gaps between the groups, then try close numbers.
• Use real objects on the table to line up and compare as well.
• Tricky sizes is a good challenge once pupils are confident.
